How To Save A Relationship
Maybe you can't put your finger on the moment when you realized your relationship was in serious jeopardy. It seems as if you and your partner very gradually drifted down two different currents in the same stream, and you realize that eventually you will be too far apart to be able to connect again.
On the other hand, perhaps you know exactly which incident signaled loudly and clearly that your boat was headed straight for the rocks. In either case, it may be possible to halt your relationship breakup, especially if your partner is equally concerned and wants to hold on to the once important ties that bound you.The first step in restoring a fragile or broken relationship is all about honesty. How invested are you in this partnership? How hard are you willing to work to save it? If you really want to save your relationship, it is time to sit down and be transparent and honest with one another, maybe more than you've been in years. It is imperative that you remain calm as you invite your lover to share the difficulties in your relationship from his or her perspective.
Listening to someone point out your areas of failure can be extremely painful, and your first reaction will probably be to defend yourself. This will be totally non-productive, convincing your partner that you truly are incapable of realizing you may need to change, never mind the process of actually incorporating change itself.
Do not interrupt and do not rush. Really listen, letting your sincerity show through good eye contact and encouragement.
If your partner does not seem interested in your reciprocal list of disappointments, don't make an issue of that. This is not the time to force anything on the one you are trying to embark on a relationship rescue with. Unwanted pressure can cause further emotional and physical withdrawal.
So, what do you need to work on to save your relationship? How are you going to show your partner that you have listened and are willing to implement change in the relationship? Start by coming up with some solid steps for improvement.
Just as an example, if you are never around to help out at home, offer some specific tasks you are willing to pick up and when you will do them. Then, no matter what, stick to your word. Follow through on your new commitments, no matter what they may be.
Suggest another time to sit down, relax together, and share how each other is feeling. Move ahead slowly and kindly with real love in your heart. You really can save your relationship and build a better and stronger one than you have had before.
